Ronaldinho and his brother, Roberto Assis, have been released from prison in Paraguay and placed under house arrest, according to Goal.com sources.

The Brazilian legend was arrested along with his brother in early March, on charges of smuggling into Paraguay using a forged passport.

But after spending 32 days in jail, the Paraguayan court has decided to release him and allow him to stay in a hotel in Asuncion waiting for the trial.

Ronaldinho and Assis’s attorneys have paid $ 1.6 million in bail on behalf of their clients after their earlier request for parole was denied because authorities in South America estimated the couple could flee the country.

Ronaldinho and Assis had been apprehended by police after providing false documents when they entered Paraguay for a visit to attend a number of promotional events.

Ronaldinho’s lawyers have argued that the passport was given to the Brazilian as a gift by a sponsor and that he did not know he was using something illegal.

In July 2019, Ronaldinho’s Brazilian and Spanish passports were confiscated due to non-payment of taxes and non-payment of fines for illegal construction in a protected natural site in Brazil.
